Dota 2 Patch 7.29 Rundown

Patch 7.29 brought a lot of balance changes to the classic MOBA last week. But the biggest changes were to Dota’s map.

The change to Dota 2’s environment will be a lot for players to get used to. Tier one and tier two towers will now have trees along both sides, allowing more effective defense tactics. It’s now easier to move through the trees near the towers in the mid lanes as well. The Town Portal Scroll area has also been expanded, making it easier for players to travel near the towers.

Trees in Dota 2’s map received a buff. They now respawn after three minutes as opposed to five. Heroes will also have a harder time cutting down trees since skills focused on cutting down trees had their hitboxes reduced. Some abilities to cut down trees were removed completely.

There are an abundance of new pathways in Dota 2’s maps as well, both near the towers and through the jungle. The small camp near the radiant’s tier one bot lane has been moved away from the cliff to create a narrow pathway between the cliff and the camp. The mid tower also had rocky terrain removed so there could be another pathway next to the small camp. This allows for better movement in this area. The addition of these hidden paths will create a new dynamic in the way teams interact and strategize.

Players have also noticed that outposts were moved to a more central location in both teams’ jungles. On the Radiant side, the outposts are now in the observer ward location. On the Dire side, the outposts are now in the center of the medium and large camps. Outposts also no longer give a large boost of XP every 10 minutes. Instead, players will receive steady experience every minute, increasing as the game continues. The purpose of taking down an enemy outpost is now to deny the other team this additional experience.

From the patch notes:

  • Compared to the previous version at 10/20/30/40 minutes, total XP given per player changed from 150/500/1050/1800 to 110/420/930/1640.

  • The XP is provided on the minute mark

  • The amount you get for each minute at the start is 2/4/6/8/10/12/14/16/18/20 for minutes 1 through 10

Bounty Runes

The map now only has two locations where bounty runes are spawned — one in each team’s jungle. Stronger bounty runes will spawn in both of those locations at the start of the game and at the power rune locations. After that, bounty runes will spawn every three minutes.

From the patch notes:

  • Bounty Runes after the initial set are reduced by 10%

  • Bounty Runes no longer spawn in the river. The amount these runes gave is now provided automatically over time through GPM.

  • Bounty Runes now spawn every 3 minutes in the respective jungle area (total rune count reduced from 4 to 2)

  • Bounty Runes no longer disappear when new ones spawn, they now spawn alongside the previous one if it isn't picked up

  • At minute 0, Bounty Runes spawn in the jungle and at the power rune locations (4 total at the start of the game)

Power Rune

There’s a new power rune on the map now as well. It’s a water rune, which spawns at the second and fourth minute in both power rune spots on the map. It can be used to fill bottles. After the fourth minute, the water rune will no longer spawn. The power runes will act as they usually do at that point onward throughout the game.

From the patch notes:

  • Added Water Power Rune. Spawns at both Power Rune locations only at minute 2 and 4. Instantly restores 100 health and 80 mana when used. Can be used to fill bottles. Starting at 6 minutes, Power Runes spawn as usual on one side.

Dota patch notes 7.29 also include a lot of changes to items. This includes the Tango pooling being removed from the Strategy Phase UI, the Satanic’s cooldown being reduced from 35 to 25 and Unholy Rage can no longer be dispelled, and Abyssal Blade no longer having a blink effect or melee ability. Check out the full list of item changes on the official patch notes blog. In the blog post, you’ll see that most heroes are also getting updates to help balance the game.
